Monday's Musical Muses

Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam, known professionally as M.I.A., is a British singer-songwriter and rapper of Sri Lankan decent. Beginning her career as a graphic arts designer, M.I.A. made the switch to music releasing her first singles in 2004, Galang and Sunshowers. She released her first album Arular in 2005, followed by Kala in 2007, and recently, /\/\ /\ Y/\, [MAYA] in 2010. M.I.A.'s original sound style contains reggae, dance, hip-hop and electro influences mixing together to introduce a new addictive sound. When listening to Arular, we knew that she was going to be big - check out the song Galang to see what I mean. Then came Kala. And it was AMAZING! I still listen to this album on repeat often and it is one of my all time favorite albums. I can't really recommend one song, but you should definitely check out the whole CD if you haven't already. With that, definitely listen to: Bamboo Banga (my favvvvvvv), World Town, and Paper Planes.

MIA's closet is chalk full of bright colors, oversized hoodies, and INSANE tights. She cleverly wears highly-designed graphic patterns, mixing patterns and bright colors, and tribal elements mixed with 80s themes. Her personal style perfectly reflects her musical sound and graphic design background. Below I've included some pics of her outfits that I think best represent her style, along with my take on her fashion sense. Enjoy!

And here's my take on MIA's outrageously colorful style :) Enjoy!
