First Line: "I didn't know anything about death until I began studying philosophy."
Summary: On the morning of her sixteenth birthday, Renée Winters was still an ordinary girl. She spent her summers at the beach, had the perfect best friend, and had just started dating the cutest guy at school. No one she had ever known had died. . . . But all of that changes when she finds her parents dead in the redwood forest, in what appears to be a strange murder. After the funeral, Renée's wealthy grandfather sends her to Gottfried Academy, a remote boarding school in Maine, where she finds herself studying subjects like Philosophy, Latin, and the "Crude Sciences." It's there that she meets Dante Berlin, a handsome and elusive boy to whom she feels inexplicably drawn. As they grow closer, strange things begin to happen, but Renée can't stop herself from falling in love. It's only when she discovers a dark tragedy in Gottfried's past that she begins to wonder if the Academy and its students are everything they seem. Little does she know that Dante is the one hiding a dangerous secret, one that has him fearing for her life.
Review: I read a review of Dead Beautiful that made me sit up and think, wow this is definitely my kind of book. After reading it, I can say that it was and it wasn't. There were things that made me love Dead Beautiful and then some that I didn't like so much. Overall, though, I can say that I quite enjoyed Dead Beautiful.
The academy itself features a lot of awesome subjects that I would've loved to have taken at school. I'm especially a philosophy fan and if you like philosophy then you'll definitely think this book is interesting.
I loved the whole mystery of the book. I was glad that the clues were hinted at in the book but I put it all together quite quickly. Unfortunately, it took the main character almost the entire book to figure it out when it just seemed so obvious.
I have to say that Dead Beautiful is very captivating. I had to keep reading it because I really had to know what was going on and if my suspicions were right. I was a little surprised at the end too which was quite good.
Dead Beautiful is definitely worth checking out. It's quite a big book but it's so addictive that you just fly through the pages anyway. If you haven't read it yet, then go ahead because it is really good and it's something a little different mixed in with something you know quite well.
One thing I'm curious about is if there'll be a sequel.
