When I first heard about Black Swan, it was already too late to see it in theatres....never mind that it wasn't showing in a theatre nearby anyways. So basically I thought I'd have to wait until it was released. Well, that is until I used my savvy internet searching skills and found the movie online. And I'm really glad I did; the movie was fantastic, and quite the thriller. And I usually love anything dance related. Center Stage, anyone??
The film stars Natalie Portman (who never disappoints) opposite Mila Kunis and Vincent Cassel, in your not-so-typical dance movie in a thriller setting. Basically the movie centers around Nina (Portman), a perfectionist and professional Ballerina who's demanding career begins to get the best of her. Her company's new fall production of Swan Lake is a much darker version, in which the Swan Queen must play two parts: the innocent White Swan and the dark, seductive Black Swan. Nina is cast as the Swan Queen but has difficulty bringing out her inner Black Swan in the ballet and travels on an intense, dangerous journey to properly portray the part of the Black Swan.
Of course I was sold on the movie as soon as I heard "ballet", but everything about the movie was fantastic, seductive, extreme, and the soundtrack was composed by Clint Mansell!!! Ahhh! He's my fav composer since Requiem for a Dream. Did I mention Rodarte did the costumes.....No wonder they were stunning! So, obviously an inspiration post was going to come out of this movie.
