Karen Lee Orzolek, professionally known as Karen O, is a singer-songwriter for two bands: Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs and Karen O and the Kids. Karen was born in South Korea, but raised in New Jersey where she became involved with music and later fashion. She attened Tisch School of Arts in NY and is known for her fashion sense - often her outrageous outfits and colorful stage costumes are designed by her friend, Christian Joy. Karen is also known for her legendary live performances and eccentric antics on stage. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs began in 2000 as an indie band experimenting with many sounds: indie, punk, garage rock, electronic, wave, and dance. They released a few EPs before compiling their first album, Fever to Tell in 2003. The song which they are probably most well-known for in the indie world is Maps, which is frequently covered. In 2006, Show Your Bones was released and Gold Lion is definitely the song to check out from the album. And finally, 2009 became an epic year for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs releasing It's Blitz!, which achieved high volume air-time and is definitely their best album. The album's tracks are all incredibly catchy and fabulous dance tunes. Many remixes have been made and they keep getting better. Check out Zero, Heads Will Roll, and Runaway. As a side project from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Karen O sang the entire soundtrack (with the help of some kiddies) for the film Where the Wild Things Are, creating some of the most sweet and innocent songs around. Check out All is Love.
One word to describe Karen O's closet: Dangerous! Since many of her pieces are designed for her, she has many original looks and items. Most of Karen's fierce outfits are accessorized with ripped tights and sneakers, uniquely loud patterns, lots of hardware and studs, leather fingerless gloves and finished with her signature blunt bowl haircut. Her eccentric style matches perfectly to her fierce sound as a singer. Below I've included some pics of her outfits that I think best represent her style, along with my take on her fashion sense.
And here's my take on Karen O's uniquely dangerous style :) Enjoy!
