Hellooooo Posse-ers and Posse-ettes! So I've been dying to post something, anything!, about Jenna Lyons and/or Lauren Hutton. And last week when I was cruising the J. Crew website I spotted and read up on the section about Lauren Hutton's Most Wanted. I totally adore her and loooved reading it, so obvi I need to share this info with you guys! But I also wanted to incorporate Jenna Lyons into the mix, not only because she is the face of J. Crew, but because she always has great style tips. But in case you don't know much about these lovely ladies....I'll fill you in on their awesomeness!
Jenna Lyons
Born in California, but made the move to New York in the name of fashion at age 20, Jenna started working for J. Crew in the eariler 90s as a men's knitwear designer. And boy, did she work her way up! She now sits as J. Crew's Creative Director and President. The girl has a charmed life...and charmed style. The best way to describe Jenna's style is,
"...juxtaposition of hard and soft, casual and dressed up, masculine and feminine...". Did you know her style icon is Slim Keith? For a great article on Jenna's climb to the top check out this Los Angeles Times article! For some videos and info on her style secrets check here, and here, and here, and here, and her shoe closet here!
Lauren Hutton
Born in South Carolina, Lauren began her career as a model and then switched to acting; however, she continued modeling throughout the years. In the late 80s, Lauren was featured in the J.Crew catalogue and recently in February 2009 as an icon for american beauty. Lauren prefectly represent's J. Crew's ability to remain versatile regardless of a person's age, designing clothing which is classic and timeless, and appropriate for any age. For more info on Lauren check here, and here!
Style Rules: Tips and Suggestions from Jenna & Lauren
I found the tips from Jenna in all the articles and videos I listed above, but for Lauren I'm only using what has been posted on the J. Crew website because I think what is listed there says it all. I mostly added my own comments below each rule, but some are elaborations made by Jenna. I'm so excited to be sharing this with all of you. Enjoy!
Jenna's Style Rules
1. Her Wardrobe Staple Items are: a White Shirt and a Blazer
-both these items can be endlessly remixed and remain classic
-you can find endless versions of both
-they can be styled to be dressed up or down
2. Secret Clothing Source: The Men's and Boys Department
-outfits don't always have to be about being tight all over; mix it up by pairing tight pants with a slouchy top, or slouchy pants with a fitted top, play!
3. Statement Jewelry is a Must!
-pops any outfit
-can be purchased no matter what kind of day your having (bad day vs. good day)
-Jenna refers to it as "girl candy"....awww cute!
-tip: reinvent your look by shopping your jewelry box! if you don't already have a statement necklace, pile multiple necklaces on top of each other and keep them together with a brooch or pin
4. Work in Opposites
-mix two materials, clothing pieces/items, or textures which are opposite together. ie: pair a tailored tweed with something silky, or tailored sequins with something slouchy
-don't pair a tailored tweed with something fluffy - they have similar texture appeal
-opposites especially to help achieve the tomboy look without being over-the-top
-this is also great for experimenting!
Bonus Tip: How to Rock the "Oversized" Trend
To wear a piece of oversized clothing, such as a slouchy shirt or sweater, use your shoulder line as the guide. Make sure the top stays on your shoulder line, unless you a rocking an off-the-shoulder look. Another tip is that skinnier sleeves will help the top look hip and not sloppy.
I think this picture from The Romantics photoshoot done by J. Crew prefectly represents the borrowed-from-the-boys, pairing opposites, and girl candy concepts are prefectly depicted here!
Lauren's Style Rules
1. "My no. 1 Fast Fashion Tip: find your right white and stick to it."
-find your perfect white shirt, based on what works for your style and fit
-there are endless possibilities for remixing this basic wardrobe piece
2. "Straight leg skinny jeans always make your legs look longer, narrow at the bottom and long is best. This leads the eye upward."
-Amen!
3. "I always like a chic and comfy flat. Plain is fine but stripe has snap!"
-flats can instantly make an outfit look more put together, so if you want to improve an outfit, pair it with some cute flats instead of your worn runners or flip flops
-plain flats go with everything, but a flat with unique detail or design can help pop an outfit
4. "Though we've been told forever that everyone looks good in black, I know after almost 50 years of wearing it for magazine shoots and movies that I don't look good in black. I prefer navy."
-this is sooooo true! well for me at least. black is okay on me, but navy works much more nicely without being too overpowering and washing you out. navy always works for me too because it brings out the blue in my eyes more.
5. "Wide stripes tend to make you look short and squat, so I always go for a skinny stripe."
-why else do you think the skinny stripe is so hot now in shirt designs? because it looks fabulous on everyone, of course! :) I love my skinny stripe shirts!
Bonus: a Fashion Mantra to Live By!
"Fashion is what you're offered four times a year. Style is what you pick out of that fashion...it's what you make of it once you've learned to accept and ignore based on what best suits you." - Lauren Hutton
Isn't Lauren Hutton a doll?! This picture is from the February 2009 J. Crew catalogue cover.
Now I thought it would be a perfect way to end this MASSIVE post by sharing two of my favorite Jenna's Picks, these images are beautiful. They are from March and April 2010. You can enlarge them by clicking on them, like all my blog images.
