Title: Leviathan
Author: Scott Westerfeld
Published: Simon and Schuster Children's, 2010
Pages: 440
First Line: "The Austrian horses glinted in the moonlight, their riders standing tall in the saddle, swords raised."
Summary: In an alternate 1914 Europe, fifteen-year-old Austrian Prince Alek, on the run from the Clanker Powers who are attempting to take over the globe using mechanical machinery, forms an uneasy alliance with Deryn who, disguised as a boy to join the British Air Service, is learning to fly genetically-engineered beasts. (Taken from Goodreads)
Review: Scott Westerfeld is one of my all-time favourite authors. That being said, I think that Leviathan is an utterly amazing read and it is now my second favourite book of his. Scott Westerfeld just has this way with words that brings the story to life and makes it all that more intriguing.

I liked both Deryn and Alek, I thought they were great main characters and I thought that Scott Westerfeld did a great job in creating the individual voices of both characters.
Leviathan is definitely a much more imaginative story than most I’ve read lately. Every machine is described in great detail and the descriptions are magnificent. I am a huge fan of descriptive writing and this book is really good for fans of descriptive writing.
Leviathan is an alternative history and so it features events and people from history related to World War I but I don’t really think you have to know much about World War I to enjoy Leviathan because I don’t and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
The illustrations in the book are really great too. They just add this whole extra layer to Leviathan that makes it one of those amazing reads.
Leviathan is one of the best books by Scott Westerfeld that I have read and I definitely recommend it. Even if, you’re not much of a fan of steampunk, I still think that Leviathan is worth your time.
