Sing Me To Sleep by Angela Morrison

    Title: Sing Me To Sleep

    Author: Angela Morrison

    Published: Razorbill, 2010

    Pages: 301

Snippet: "I needed a whole heart once in my life. Is that so wrong?"

    Summary: THE TRANSFORMATION

Beth has always been “The Beast”—that’s what everyone at school calls her because of her awkward height, facial scars, and thick glasses. Beth’s only friend is geeky, golden-haired Scott. That is, until she’s selected to be her choir’s soprano soloist, and receives the makeover that will change her life forever.
    THE LOVE AFFAIR
When Beth’s choir travels to Switzerland, she meets Derek: pale, brooding, totally dreamy. Derek’s untethered passion—for music, and for Beth—leaves her breathless. Because in Derek’s eyes? She’s not The Beast, she’s The Beauty.
    THE IMPOSSIBLE CHOICE
When Beth comes home, Scott, her best friend in the world, makes a confession that leaves her completely torn. Should she stand by sweet, steady Scott or follow the dangerous, intense new feelings she has for Derek?
    THE HEARTBREAK
The closer Beth gets to Derek, the further away he seems. Then Beth discovers that Derek’s been hiding a dark secret from her …one that could shatter everything. (Taken from Goodreads)

Review: What I thought was going to be a story about a girl who transforms herself into a person she feels happy and comfortable with turned out to be so much more.  The first few pages were about Beth and how she transformed herself into someone she felt more comfortable with. She changed her looks which dramatically changed her outlook on life.

Then she meets Derek and he's hiding something. In the end curiosity got the better of me and I just had to know what his big secret is. Wow. In a way I wish I could go back to not knowing. But now I do. It was quite a shock.  Basically, when I found out my whole opinion of the book changed.  Up until that point I'd thought Sing Me To Sleep was alright. After that I was astounded.

Sing Me To Sleep is amazing.  I cried. It was really sad.  It not only deals with how people perceive themselves it goes far deeper. I can't say too much without giving away any details but Sing Me To Sleep is a truly astounding read.

I have to say that I don't think I've read a book quite like it. I would definitely recommend this book! Sing Me To Sleep is truly earth shattering and so well written.

Hate List by Jennifer Brown

    Title: Hate List
    Author: Jennifer Brown
Published: New York : Little, Brown and Co., 2009
    Pages: 405
Snippet: 'Just like there's always time for pain, there's always time for healing.'
Summary: Sixteen-year-old Valerie, whose boyfriend Nick committed a school shooting at the end of their junior year, struggles to cope with integrating herself back into high school life, unsure herself whether she was a hero or a villain.
Review: Hate List is one of those rare finds that leaves you completely stunned and quite literally sends your emotions running around in circles.
As I was reading Hate List I found myself on the edge of my seat wanting to know more about everything in the book. I really loved Valerie as a character, I found myself feeling so bad for her. I hated the way that almost everyone treated her. I think that in a way I found Valerie to be so relatable was because she had flaws and she wasn't perfect, she was a typical girl.
I loved how Jennifer Brown put together the novel with the main story but also some newspaper articles about the incident. It all tied nicely together and created one very good book.
The ending was incredibly emotional and I felt tears prickling in my eyes as I was reading it.
Hate List brings up some very interesting issues and I found it amazing to read how sometimes the smallest little things can escalate into something that becomes out of control. I was also surprised about how sometimes people say things without thinking and then later these little things can become huge.
I feel like I could go on forever about how much I loved Hate List. But I think if I did that there would be no point in anyone who reads this to read the book. So I will stop here and say that if you have not read Hate List then you definitely need to. It is a must-read!

EyeLeash by Jess C. Scott

    Title: EyeLeash
    Author: Jess C. Scott
    Published: CreateSpace, 2009
    Pages: 260
Snippet: "maybe everyone’s all about fakeness...hiding whatever’s not “great”
    abt themselves..."
Summary: Jade Ashton is a sassy virgin. In her private blog, she vents about "fitting in" a world where superficiality reigns supreme. Suddenly all logic flies out the window when she meets Novan: the former geek, who's morphed into a delicious songwriter-musician. They decide to be "friends-with-benefits". But it's Novan, with his poems and riddling passages on his own blog--which *isn't private*--that backs out.
Review: EyeLeash was quite an interesting story and it was also very different and honestly, not my kind of book. Yet I found it at times mesmerizing and other times I found it to be boring.
As I write this I'm still not sure how I felt about EyeLeash overall. I guess in a way I'm kind of neutral towards it. There were bits I liked and bits I didn't. I didn't love or hate EyeLeash.
One thing I didn't like so much was all of the references to sex. Not my kind of book. But thats ok because other people do like to read about that stuff.
I didn't like Jade she was too shallow, but thats the point in the grand scheme of things I think.
Novan, he was cool, a little moody but cool. I liked how he seemed so much like a real person. So did Jade.
What I got from this book was that it's basically about self-discovery and it was really interesting. I liked watching both Jade and Novan transform into better people so to speak.
I think EyeLeash raised some interesting issues. Basically, about the media today and everything like that.
The ending I had predicted half of but it was actually not bad. I think that EyeLeash would be better for an older audience like 16+ because of some of the content but other than that, it's not a bad book to read.
Finally, the name EyeLeash sounds weird. I wondered what it meant and the cool thing is I found out and that was just really really cool.

Identical by Ellen Hopkins

    Title: Identical
    Author: Ellen Hopkins
Published: New York : Margaret K. McElderry Books, 2008
    Pages: 565
Summary: Kaeleigh and Raeanne are 16-year-old identical twins, the daughters of a district court judge father and politician mother running for US Congress. Everything on the surface seems fine, but underneath run very deep and damaging secrets. When the girls were 9, Daddy started to turn to his beloved Kaeleigh in ways a father never should and has been sexually abusing her for years. For Raeanne, she needs to numb the pain of not being Daddy's favorite; for Kaeleigh, she wants to do everything she can to feel something normal, even if it means cutting herself and vomiting after every binge.
Review: After reading Tricks by Ellen Hopkins I wanted to read more by her and so when the opportunity arose for me to read Identical, I snapped it up and I'm quite glad that I did.
At first I was a little confused about how the story was going but then I got into the swing of what was happening and from there I was intrigued as to what was going to happen next.
One thing I noticed about the Gardella family was that they were a family full of secrets. The whole time we are kept in the dark about most of these secrets and some of them are actually quite serious and shocking. I was amazed at some of the stuff revealed.
While I absolutely love books that have twist endings I was kind of disappointed because I had guessed what the twist was. But if you love books with twist endings then you will definitely love the twist at the end of this book.
I thought that Identical was a really sad book. It was sad because of the ending, and sad because of all the horrible people that were in the girls' lives.
Overall, Ellen Hopkins did a brilliant job with Identical, it was a really good book and I just have a warning that this book is not a light novel and it does have some graphic content. So if you don't really like reading these kinds of books then Identical may not be your type of book.
