Dancer Inspiration Post

As some of you might know last week my university's dance club had our annual recitals and I was really excited to be apart of it. I danced for fourteen years when I was younger but had to stop during my undergraduate degree because I had way too much to do and the class times weren't working with my course schedule. Fortunately, my graduate university has a dance schedule that works with course hours and I could begin again! I only took two classes (ballet and videodance) and they were so much fun. The many rehersals and 4 show recitals last week were a lot of fun, but also very exhausting. And so, I thought I'd do a dancer inspired post! Monday's Musical Muses

Born in Oklahoma, raised in Dallas, and currently living in Manhattan, Annie Clark is the frontwoman (singer and guitarist) for St. Vincent. Annie Clark began her musical career playing the guitar at 12 years old and attended Berklee College of Music for three years. She joined The Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens' touring band, before releasing her first solo album under St. Vincent in 2007, titled Marry Me.  After gaining much popularity and opening for many other indie artists, St. Vincent  released a second album, Actor, in 2009 which was also recieved with much popularity in the indie world; Annie revealed Actor was mainly inspired by Disney film scores. St. Vincent's sound is best described as hypnotic and perfectly executed pop songs, which Annie had lots of time to perfect during her time with The Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens. If you're looking to check out some tunes by St. Vincent for the first time, I'd recommend Marry Me and Jesus Saves, I Spend from the album Marry Me. Also, check out The Party from Actor. One of her fantastic collaborations with Bon Iver is worth checking out also!

Annie Clark's closet is full of classic wardrobe staples like the white tee and white blouse; she always looks like she just walked out of Urban Outfitters. Although many might see Annie's style as plain, her quirky haircut gives her look its own unique appearence. Often spotted wearing white tees, mini skirts with tights, cute mini dresses, blouses, and cardigans, Annie always looks classic with minimal effort. We might know Zooey Deschanel   from the big screen, in the movies Elf, Yes Man, and  (500) Days of Summer, but did you also know she is in a band?! Well if you saw Elf than you know she can sing! Zooey is a actress and singer-songwriter from California, who teamed up with M. Ward to create an indie band, She & Him, which released their first album in 2008, Volume One. Volume One recieved positive reviews and became quite popular, especially with the help of music videos in collaboration with (500) Days of Summer. Volume Two was released in 2010 and also recieved positive reviews and the duo gained an instant following. Zooey does the singing, writes the lyrics, and plays piano and ukulele, while M. Ward provides the guitar and production. Together, they have created songs that sound like sunny-day pop songs with a throw back to 50s and 60s vintage. I have really enjoyed the songs Why Do You Let Me Stay Here and In the Sun. Check them out! Did I mention there is dancing in In the Sun music video?!:) Also, did I mention she married Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie?! She did. NOT Hunter Burgan *phewf!*

Zooey's vintage voice matches her vintage style perfectly: the girl is always spotted wearing floral dresses, mary-jane heels, tights, cute headbands or bows, and adorable coats. In (500) Days of Summer, Zooey's character Summer Finn was always portrayed wearing a blue outfit. This explains exactly why I love her clothes so much! The Nutcracker

My all-time favorite traditional movie of the holiday season is The Nutcracker. The main reason being that the story is also performed as a ballet - which I've seen many many times - and its no secret that I'm dance-obsessed. So to celebrate the holidays and bring some Christmas spirit to my blog, I thought I'd write an inspiration post of the Nutcracker characters. Emilíana Torrini is a singer/songwriter from Iceland, who I've been following since LOTR: The Two Towers came out because she replaced Bijork who was to originally sing the ending credits song: Gollum's Song. Even though Gollum's Song isn't very upbeat, I checked out her other works and was pleasantly surprised to discover an amazing pop-folk singer with the most intriguing lyrics. I also discovered that her song, Today has been okay, was featured on the O.C. - one of my favorite shows at the time.

Her more recent album, Me and Armini, is such a fantastic album. The songs are catchy, upbeat, and addictive. I don't know how many times I've listened to the title track but I had it on repeat for about 3 months after the album was released. Amazing. If you haven't checked out her music, I highly suggest you give the Me and Armini album a listen and even take a gander at her music videos which are very cute, such as Jungle Drum.

Besides her music being so original, her personal clothing style is also unique. She tends to wear classic, whimsical pieces of which most appear vintage, which is why I wanted to feature her in a blog post. Enjoy!
