Summary: On a soft summer night in Vermont, twelve-year-old Lisa went into the woods behind her house and never came out again. Before she disappeared, she told her little brother, Sam, about a door that led to a magical place where she would meet the King of the Fairies and become his queen.

Fifteen years later, Phoebe is in love with Sam, a practical, sensible man who doesn’t fear the dark and doesn’t have bad dreams—who, in fact, helps Phoebe ignore her own. But suddenly the couple is faced with a series of eerie, unexplained occurrences that challenge Sam’s hardheaded, realistic view of the world. As they question their reality, a terrible promise Sam made years ago is revealed—a promise that could destroy them all.  (Taken from Goodreads)

Thoughts: I wasn’t so fond of the prologue of Don’t Breathe a Word, but I decided to persevere and actually get to the main story which was much better.

After the prologue, Don’t Breathe a Word became really creepy and mysterious, I was absolutely engrossed in the story because things were happening and I just had to know what was going on.  Unfortunately my interest got a little lost somewhere.  What started off being really mysterious and interesting with that little bit of creepiness ended up, to me, going a little over the top and just had too many secrets and not enough revelation.

I started to get bored and irritated because there were just more and more questions opening up and I felt like I would never get any answers.

I kept going, and I have to say that it did get better and I was really interested again.  Unfortunately, it didn’t last very long.  The ending wasn’t one that I particularly enjoyed to be honest.  To me it felt a little like the author had gotten so far with the story and then wasn’t sure how the ending should be.  I just found the ending to be really disappointing.

So, overall, I had a roller coaster ride of love and hate with this book.  It evened itself out a little so that my overall feeling about Don’t Breathe a Word by Jennifer McMahon was an average read for me.

I didn’t like that I didn’t know which direction this book was going to take.  I just felt like it had too much going on at once so I couldn’t get the full picture.  I think that my main issue with the book was that it contained parts related to the fairy world as well as the real world and I’m not really a fan of books that incorporate both so heavily.

I did like the cover, the girl’s stare is so piercing and so creepy.  I also liked some of the parts of the book.  As for characters, I really liked Sam.  There was just something about Sam that I really liked and I thought that he was just so realistic and relatable in some ways.

I felt that Don’t Breathe a Word was a mixture of good and bad.  It wasn’t really my cup of tea but it wasn’t the worst book I’d ever read either.  I think that if you like fairy lore mixed in with the real world to the point where it is heavier on the real world aspects then I think you’ll really enjoy Don’t Breathe a Word.  It has a good mystery element so anyone who loves a good mystery will probably be intrigued by this one.  Needless to say, I’m intrigued by Jennifer McMahon’s writing and I think I’ll give another one of her books a go.
